About the Role

We’re looking for a visionary Director of Engineering (Data & AI/ML) to lead Bolt’s global data and AI initiatives.

This leader will own our data architecture, machine learning infrastructure, analytics systems, and commerce data products powering everything from recommendations and fraud detection to agentic commerce and risk modeling.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and expand a high-performing team of data engineers, AI/ML specialists, and data scientists.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and inclusion.
  • Manage and develop technical leads and engineering managers.
  • Recruit and retain top-tier data and AI talent globally.

Strategy & Vision

  • Define and drive Bolt’s long-term data and AI strategy, including architecture, infrastructure, and data governance.
  • Partner with Product, Risk, Growth, and Finance to align data initiatives with business goals.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and bring cutting-edge ideas into execution.

Technical Execution & Architecture

  • Oversee the design and operation of large-scale data pipelines, ML training systems, data lakes/warehouses, and analytics platforms.
  • Ensure performance, scalability, and architectural excellence.
  • Lead technical decision-making, balancing delivery with long-term sustainability.
  • Promote best practices in monitoring, observability, and operational excellence.

Collaboration & Impact

  • Collaborate across engineering, design, and product teams to deliver data-driven solutions.
  • Communicate complex technical strategies clearly to executive leadership.
  • Champion data quality, governance, and security across the organization.

Education & Experience

Education:

  • Master’s or PhD in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field.

Professional Experience:

  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, AI/ML systems, and large-scale distributed platforms.
  • 7+ years of progressive leadership experience, including managing managers or senior technical leads.
  • Deep expertise with:
  • Data Warehousing: Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift
  • Streaming & Processing: Spark, Kafka, Flink, Airflow
  • MLOps & Model Serving: MLFlow, Vertex AI, SageMaker, or custom ML infrastructure
  • Data Governance & BI Tools: dbt, Looker, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Proven success in defining technical strategy and delivering on multi-quarter roadmaps.
  • Experience working in high-growth, fast-paced tech environments (startup or enterprise).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Bonus Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in Machine Learning, Statistics, or Computer Science.
  • Experience leading distributed global teams.
  • Expertise in fraud detection, personalization, or identity verification systems.
  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP, or Azure data/AI services.
  • Understanding of data privacy and compliance (GDPR, CCPA).
