About the Role
We are looking for a Business Development Manager (BDM) to join our growing retail distribution team. You'll be responsible for managing, growing, and strengthening our network of retail insurance agency partners across the South-Central/West United States.
This is a client-facing, strategic role with heavy travel (about 50% of the time). You'll be the face of Cover Whale to our Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners, attending in-person meetings, industry events, and agency visits while also driving growth via remote engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain relationships with agency partners to grow premium volume and brand presence.
- Manage a portfolio of retail distribution partners to exceed regional revenue targets.
- Identify and onboard high-potential new agents and brokers.
- Travel to attend meetings, seminars, and industry events across the region (AR, KS, LA, OK, TX).
- Collaborate with underwriting, marketing, and product teams to streamline growth efforts.
- Establish and track KPIs; meet or exceed set goals consistently.
- Conduct market research and competitor analysis to identify growth opportunities.
- Provide strategic input to enhance business development and partner management processes.
- Drive brand awareness through proactive outreach and relationship management.
Education & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Insurance, or a related field.
- 4–6 years of experience in business development or account management.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in commercial insurance.
- Experience working with insurance carriers, wholesalers, or MGAs.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of commercial auto/trucking insurance.
- Familiarity with retail & wholesale brokers, MGAs, and strategic distribution partners.
- Experience working in a remote or field-based sales role with measurable KPIs.
- Demonstrated ability in cold calling, negotiating, and relationship building.
- Solid understanding of insurance financials and market dynamics.
