The Role: Assistant Controller
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join our dynamic Accounting team. This role will oversee day-to-day accounting operations across Corporate, Retail, Cultivation, and Supply Chain divisions. You’ll lead process improvements, support ERP system implementation, and provide critical financial insights to help drive the company’s strategic goals.
You will report directly to the Controller and play a vital role in enhancing financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and mentoring a growing accounting team.
What You’ll Do
- Financial Oversight: Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and relevant regulations.
- Month-End Close: Manage monthly close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and reporting across AR, AP, Cash, Payroll, Fixed Assets, and Opex.
- Financial Analysis: Provide detailed financial analysis and actionable insights to improve organizational performance.
- Budget Management: Lead budget preparation, monitor variances, and deliver strategic financial recommendations.
- Internal Controls: Develop and maintain strong internal controls to protect financial integrity.
- Team Leadership: Mentor, develop, and manage the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize accounting workflows, reduce manual effort, and increase accuracy.
- Audit Support: Coordinate with external auditors and ensure audit readiness and compliance.
- Risk & Compliance: Monitor regulatory changes, manage financial risks, and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with departments such as Supply Chain and Operations to align financial strategies and processes.
- ERP System: Play a key role in building out and optimizing ERP system functionalities.
- Lease Accounting: Apply ASC 842 standards in lease accounting and reporting.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Lead and manage finance staff, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
- Delegate tasks and projects effectively to ensure team productivity.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and professional development opportunities.
- Ensure high-quality, accurate financial deliverables from the team.
What We’re Looking For
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. CPA certification preferred but not required.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within the cannabis or highly regulated industries. Proven track record managing multi-functional accounting teams and handling complex financial operations.
- Technical Skills: Advanced Excel proficiency is a must. Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Netsuite, or Acumatica is highly valuable. Familiarity with SQL and Business Intelligence tools is a plus.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
- Interpersonal: Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills to work effectively across teams and departments.
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Solid understanding of GAAP, ASC 842 lease accounting standards, and compliance requirements in the cannabis industry.
