About the Role
The Lieutenant plays a critical leadership role in maintaining the security, safety, and operations of a correctional facility. This position supervises correctional officers, coordinates shift operations, and ensures adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations. Lieutenants provide guidance, discipline, and training to staff while maintaining high standards of inmate supervision and facility security.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct shift briefings and supervise correctional officers.
- Coordinate staffing, shift coverage, and day-to-day security operations.
- Provide leadership and serve as a positive role model for subordinate staff.
- Conduct performance reviews, administer progressive discipline, and approve officer schedules.
- Maintain security of assigned areas, respond to emergencies, and patrol facility grounds.
- Supervise inmate work crews, escort inmates, and manage movement within the facility.
- Operate security equipment and perform inmate counts.
- Conduct searches for contraband and enforce institutional rules.
- Prepare accurate reports documenting inmate behavior, incidents, and facility activities.
Required Education and Experience
- Education: High school diploma or GED required.
- Preferred: 30+ college credit hours or an associate/bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of correctional officer or security experience in a government or private corrections agency.

Skills & Competencies
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
- Knowledge of correctional facility operations, security protocols, and inmate behavior.
- Proficiency in firearms, restraint methods, and safety equipment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and documentation.
- Ability to act quickly in emergency situations and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Special Requirements
- Must be at least 20 years old.
- Must be of good moral character and pass background checks, drug testing, and annual physicals.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must be willing to work any assigned shift.
- May be designated as a peace officer under Oklahoma law, requiring additional training and certification.
- Individuals with certain criminal convictions, domestic violence history, or dishonorable military discharge are not eligible.
