Researcher’s at Hiroshima university discovered a link between gum diseases and atrial fibrillation.
What is atrial fibrillation:
●It’s an abnormal hearth rthym .
●It is characterized by rapid and irregular beating of the atrial chamber’s of heart.
Heart diseases , heart attack , high blood pressure , diabetes , obesity and lung disease including pneumonia
Symptoms: Shortness of breathe, chest pain , fatigue and nausea are symptoms of atrial fibrillation.
Porphyromonas gingivalis a bacteria related with gum can increase atrial fibrillation. This research is made due to following reasons where this bacteria can infiltrate the heart leading to scar tissue develop. Most commonly it can settle in left atrium of heart leading to atrial fibrillation.
It can envade the immune response and trigger inflammation leading to fibrosis and heart damage.
Preventions: According to scientific research brushing daily, good hygeine and regular dental checkups can prevent atrial fibrillation and it can reduce it’s risk.
Research:
Also people with periodontitis a common form of gum disease are more likely to get cardiovascular diseases . AFib cases nearly doubled in under a decade, rising from 33.5 million in 2010 to roughly 60 million by 2019.
Previously these bacteria were detected in brain , liver and placenta but now according to leading research it can increase rate of heart attack too.
Shunsuke Miyauchi, study first author, assistant professor at HU’s Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences:
“ The link between gum bacteria and atrial fibrillation is still unknown , but the spread of periodontal bacteria through the bloodstream may connect these conditions.”
They tested this on a group of mice expose them to bacteria after 18 weeks they come to know mice exposed to the bacterium were six times more likely to develop abnormal heart rhythms, with a 30% AFib inducibility rate. They also spotted the bacterium in the heart’s left atrium, where infected tissue had turned stiff and fibrous.
Research has previously suggested that inflammation was at cause with immune cells in the gums when fighting infection give an opportunity for chemical signalling in that inflammatory response to enter the bloodstream.

The PAROKRANK study reveals that participants with periodontitis had a 49% higher risk of cardiovascular diseases as compare to people with healthy gums. According to Dr danielle kamato : Gum bacteria can cause deposition of cholestrol and fats in arteries and can cause blood vessels to become sticky.
Conclusion: Periodontal treatment can play a vital role in prevention of atrial fibrillation also through good hygeine and flossing we can protect our heart from cardiovascular diseases.
Non-smokers and people with maintain balance diet are not likely to get atrial fibrillation. Consuming high sugar and food with fats can lead to gum and heart diseases. People with diabetes are more at risk because gum bacteria can pass through blood stream and can increase heart diseases.
