Role Overview
Transamerica is seeking an experienced Life Underwriting Consultant to join our growing team. This role focuses on effective risk selection, mentoring junior underwriters, and providing consultative guidance across underwriting, new business, and distribution teams. Approval authority ranges from $2,500,000 to $5,000,000, with the ability to evaluate cases up to $7,500,000.
You will leverage your expertise to make complex underwriting decisions, mentor team members, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in the underwriting process.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and approve life insurance applications, ensuring proper risk selection.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters.
- Collaborate with distribution, new business, and underwriting teams to streamline processes.
- Apply Lean principles and drive continuous improvement in underwriting workflows.
- Conduct complex case assessments, defend decisions, and provide actionable recommendations.
- Utilize digital underwriting tools and platforms to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 6 years of life or health underwriting experience.
- Experience with AWD or similar underwriting systems, MS Office, and digital platforms.
- Preferred: Completed LOMA classes, AALU Certification, working towards FALU/FLMI designations.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, policy evaluation, and life insurance products.

Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $94,000 – $130,000/year (estimated, may vary by location and experience)
- Bonus Eligibility: Up to 12% based on performance
