Role Overview
As a Financial Counselor, you’ll review patient benefits and collect financial liabilities for inpatient, observation, and outpatient services. You will assist patients with understanding their financial responsibilities and financial assistance options while ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to providing compassionate patient service.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and verify patient insurance and financial information
- Estimate and collect patient liabilities including copays, deductibles, and outstanding balances
- Contact recently discharged patients to collect unpaid balances
- Support daily cashiering tasks, including cash reconciliation and deposits
- Work with case management on regulatory form completion
- Monitor missed collection opportunities and follow-up with patients regularly
- Manage communications with patients unable to pay while admitted
- Ensure completion of all required patient consents and forms
- Assist with insurance verification and coordination of benefits
- Run reports, analyze denials, and escalate uncollected balances as needed
Education & Experience
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required
- Experience: 1-3 years of customer service experience preferred
- Prior knowledge or experience in healthcare billing, insurance verification, or financial counseling is a plus
Required Qualifications
- Ability to obtain CRCR certification within 9 months of hire (paid by company)
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Basic understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, EOBs, COBRA, and healthcare billing processes preferred
