Hiscox is looking for an Associate Data Engineer to join its U.S. Data Engineering practice. This is an early-career opportunity to grow as part of a talented and modern engineering team working with cutting-edge cloud technologies.
You’ll play a key role in developing and expanding a modern cloud data platform, collaborating with stakeholders to solve meaningful business problems using data.
What You’ll Do
- Partner with business stakeholders to identify high-value data solutions that drive decision-making.
- Design and build data pipelines and transformation processes on a modern cloud platform.
- Translate business requirements into clear development tasks and estimates.
- Research and adopt new technologies to improve data systems.
- Ensure solutions are efficient, scalable, and maintainable, balancing speed and quality.
- Move projects quickly from proof-of-concept to production.
- Participate in code reviews and agile ceremonies.
- Present ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Continuously learn and develop your skills to grow within the team.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency (or ability to quickly learn) SQL and/or Python.
- Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts, structured & unstructured data, and data quality.
- Exposure to DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and modern deployment workflows.
- Ability to contribute across design, infrastructure, development, testing, and maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a “right tool for the job” mindset.
- Understanding of cloud technologies (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
- Self-driven, curious, and eager to take initiative.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of Databricks, dbt, Power BI, Terraform, Docker, or Azure Pipelines.
- Experience working in an agile environment.
- Exposure to data science or business intelligence.
- Familiarity with modern data platform architectures and automation tools
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of relevant experience (internships or projects count).
- Familiarity with data engineering principles, cloud data platforms, and pipeline automation.
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software engineering best practices.
