About the Role

As a Commercial Underwriter, you will analyze credit data and financial information to evaluate the risk of extending credit or loans to commercial clients. You will work with complex commercial credit relationships valued at $2.5 million and above. This role also includes stepping in as Credit Analysis Manager when needed, supervising team members, and supporting relationship managers in structuring and monitoring credit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed analysis of financial statements and credit requests on commercial loans of $2.5 million or more.
  • Conduct loan and annual reviews on borrowers and guarantors.
  • Prepare cash flow analyses, collateral valuations, and global cash flow assessments.
  • Collaborate with relationship managers during customer calls and site visits.
  • Maintain and update credit files, ensuring compliance with company policies and documentation standards.
  • Identify policy exceptions, missing documents, and strengths or weaknesses in credit relationships.
  • Run credit bureaus and background checks to assess creditworthiness and fraud risk.
  • Train and mentor new relationship managers, credit analysts, and team members on underwriting processes.
  • Supervise employees in the Credit Analysis Department during the manager’s absence.
  • Stay updated on lending protocols and industry trends.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficient understanding of financial statements, ratios, and credit risk concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research skills and ability to summarize industry and customer information.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools like Moody’s, MPC, IBS, ADP, Microsoft Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Effective leadership, delegation, and team-building abilities.
  • Commitment to professionalism, quality, and organizational values.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years of commercial credit analysis or underwriting experience, preferably in a banking environment.
  • Experience working with large commercial credit portfolios ($2.5 million+) is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor credit analysts and support staff.
  • Strong familiarity with bank-specific credit analysis software and regulatory requirements.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based with moderate noise levels; remote work available within designated states.
  • Regular sitting, talking, hearing; occasional standing, walking, lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Vision requirements include close and distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
